From online basket to real-life experience.

Comino Magazine followed a genuine Dave's Online grocery shop from the first tap in the app through browsing, basket building, rewards, delivery selection, live tracking, arrival and unpacking. The physical experience was real; selected campaign visuals were then refined with AI as a clearly disclosed editorial layer.

The online experience

Ordering online felt like more than scrolling through a supermarket catalogue.

We began inside the Dave's app at the Il-Gżira store and deliberately explored the journey as an ordinary online shopper would. Instead of going straight to search, we moved through the storefront, category pages, favourites, monthly savings and the app's meal-inspiration tools before building the basket.

The interface grouped the supermarket into familiar shopping areas such as groceries, dairy and eggs, fruit and vegetables, bread and wraps, deli, chilled foods, butcher, frozen foods, snacks, beverages and household essentials. That made a large product range easier to navigate on a phone, especially when the aim was to mix everyday staples with specialist items in the same order.

We also found features designed to reduce the amount of repetitive shopping. Favourites keeps regularly considered products close at hand, while Fast Shopping is built around quickly returning to previous purchases. For shoppers who tend to buy similar basics each week, that kind of shortcut could be more useful than starting from zero every time.

Step by step

What the ordering journey looked like.

Our review followed the full digital path rather than judging the delivery from the doorstep alone.

01

Choose the store and browse

The app opened into the selected Dave's store and exposed both product categories and visual discovery areas. We could browse by department, use search, or move through featured sections rather than relying on one shopping method.

02

Explore offers and inspiration

The October Monthly Savings section presented current offers visually. The storefront also included "What's for Dinner?" recipe inspiration, turning recipe inspiration into shoppable ingredient lists rather than leaving meal ideas disconnected from the basket.

03

Build the basket

We assembled a mixed basket covering fresh produce, gluten-free choices, pantry goods, dairy and chilled products, snacks, treats and pet-care items. Prices and quantities remained visible throughout the process, making it easy to keep an eye on the total.

04

Choose delivery or pickup

At checkout, the app offered delivery to the saved address or pickup from the selected store. We chose delivery and selected an available time window. The store information shown during the experience also explained the free-delivery threshold applicable at the time.

05

Add delivery instructions

A Special Request area allowed extra drop-off preferences to be added, including options such as calling before delivery or upon arrival. This is a small feature, but useful when delivering to offices, apartment blocks or locations that need clearer instructions.

06

Pay with the available wallet options

The checkout displayed Online Payment, E-Wallet and Dave's Rewards options. For this collaboration, the basket was paid using the Dave's Rewards balance, with the app clearly showing the amount applied before the order was submitted.

07

Track the order

After checkout, the order moved into the tracking flow. The app displayed the delivery window and later showed that the driver was on the way, together with map-based tracking. That continuity matters: the customer does not have to leave the same digital journey once payment is complete.

08

Receive and unpack

The final step became physical. The order arrived in Dave's-branded packaging, with chilled items separated in insulated red bags. We photographed the delivery as it arrived and then unpacked the basket for the editorial shoot.

Discovery inside the app

The recipe and repeat-shopping tools were the most interesting additions.

Two features stood out because they move beyond the basic supermarket-app formula. First, the recipe area connects inspiration directly to products: a customer can browse a finished dish, see the ingredients, adjust servings and add the required items to the cart. Second, Fast Shopping is aimed at repeat behaviour, allowing previous-order shopping to become a much shorter process.

The monthly promotions also had their own visual presentation rather than appearing only as discounted price labels inside product lists. For a customer who enjoys browsing offers, that creates a more magazine-like shopping layer inside the app itself.

From screen to doorstep

The experience stayed connected after checkout.

The strongest part of this order was the continuity between the digital and physical stages. Delivery selection, instructions, payment, tracking and the final arrival all sat within one recognisable journey. Once the order reached us, the branded cardboard box, red insulated bags and chilled-product separation gave the delivery a clear sense of organisation.

For Comino Magazine, this mattered because the feature was not built around isolated product shots. We had an end-to-end customer experience to document: discovering the service, making choices, checking out, waiting for the delivery and then seeing how those choices translated into the real basket on the table.

The grocery basket at a glance

The shopping list moved easily between everyday necessities and small extras. Schär Corn Flakes and gluten-free wraps sat alongside Barilla spaghetti, tuna, sweetcorn, Alpro almond drink, yoghurts, jams and Dave’s roasted cashews with cranberries. That combination of pantry staples, chilled foods and treats is part of the appeal of a single online supermarket order.

Gluten-free cupboard favourites

The gluten-free selection was particularly useful for building flexible breakfasts and quick lunches. Schär Corn Flakes, Ciabattine Rustiche, Orangino biscuits and cocoa muffins joined Old El Paso gluten-free tortillas, Schär wraps and a chocolate-orange wafer from Brain Foods. Rather than shopping across several specialist stores, these options were available within the same basket.

Breakfasts worth getting up for

A few simple items open up numerous morning combinations: cereal with almond drink, strawberry yoghurt with sliced banana, or rice cakes topped with jam. Dave’s roasted cashew nuts and cranberries also work as a snack or a crunchy addition to a breakfast bowl. These are uncomplicated choices for busy mornings.

Fresh ingredients, everyday possibilities

Bananas, cherry tomatoes and cucumber provided the fresh side of our shop, together with the salad pack received in the delivery. They can become quick sides, additions to wraps or a light lunch with beans, tuna and feta. The appeal is having familiar fresh produce arrive alongside the rest of the groceries.

Lunch and dinner, sorted

The more substantial part of the order included gluten-free spaghetti, rice, wraps, canned tuna, sweetcorn, chickpeas and different beans. Alongside feta, Edam, Gouda and Parmigiano Reggiano, these items make an adaptable base for rice bowls, pasta dishes, filled wraps and warm pantry meals, with very little advance planning.

Something savoury, something sweet

The basket was not all meal ingredients. Cheese-and-onion crisps, Maretti bruschette, Schär biscuits and muffins, Nutella and chocolate ice cream added a treat element to the delivery. Rice cakes offer another option for a simple sweet snack with spread or jam. Those smaller purchases matter in a shop intended to cover everyday life.

Stocking the cupboard in one go

Beans, chickpeas, tuna and sweetcorn are the sort of ingredients that make weekday meals easier. The order also included rice, instant coffee, orange and strawberry jams and other longer-lasting essentials. Keeping these on hand means a quick lunch can often be assembled without another trip to the shop.

One order, many household needs

Our Dave’s Online order brought together fresh produce, yoghurts, cheeses, gluten-free foods, pantry ingredients, snacks and cat supplies. This breadth was one of the most noticeable aspects of shopping through the app: the list did not have to be organised around separate shops or separate delivery arrangements.

A little freshness on the side

Cherry tomatoes and cucumber are easy ingredients to use immediately, whether chopped into a simple salad, added to wraps or paired with feta and chickpeas. Bananas bring a ready-to-eat fruit choice for breakfast or an afternoon snack. Together these items balanced the more shelf-stable parts of the grocery order.

The cats were on the shopping list too

The pet-care part of our basket included Whiskas 1+ Tuna Jelly, Whiskas Beef and Felix Goody Bag Seaside Mix. Being able to add cat food and treats while shopping for household groceries made the order more practical: another small errand could be taken care of in the same checkout.

Comino view

The strongest part is the continuity.

Dave's Online brings together supermarket browsing, visual promotions, meal inspiration, repeat-shopping shortcuts, rewards, delivery selection and order tracking in one mobile journey. The experience then continues physically through recognisable branded packaging and insulated transport for chilled items.

For Comino Magazine, that made it particularly suited to our Human + AI editorial model: the shopping, checkout, delivery, unpacking and original photography were real; AI was used afterwards as a creative production tool for selected campaign imagery.
