Karamelli.
Brunch that refuses to be rushed.

In the heart of Victoria, Karamelli turns all-day brunch into something colourful, playful and deliberately unhurried — from a full vegan breakfast and salmon poke bowl to truffle fries, fruit-forward drinks and a very necessary double-dessert ending.

The Comino Experience

Breakfast, lunch and cake can all belong to the same afternoon.

There are cafés you visit for coffee, places you choose for breakfast, and others you save for something sweet. Karamelli manages to blur all three.

Set on Republic Street in the centre of Victoria, the café describes itself as an all-day brunch spot built around cosy comfort, a modern twist, specialty coffee and desserts made fresh in-house every morning. Its own philosophy is almost an invitation to slow down: come for breakfast, stay through lunch.

That is exactly the kind of place that makes sense in Gozo. You can arrive with a plan for a quick stop and leave considerably later after the table has somehow progressed from breakfast to fries, from drinks to cheesecake.

For our Comino Magazine visit, we deliberately chose a spread that crossed different parts of the menu. The result was less a single meal than a useful snapshot of Karamelli's personality: plant-based comfort, international brunch influences, indulgent sides, colourful drinks and desserts that refuse to be treated as an afterthought.

“Karamelli works because it does not take brunch too seriously while clearly taking the food seriously.”

The Menu Personality

Comfort food, but with room to play.

Karamelli's wider menu is deliberately broad. Breakfast classics sit beside dishes such as Chicken N' Waffle, Shakshuka, Hummus & Eggs, Maltese open toasts, ftajjar, burgers and bowls. It could easily feel scattered. Instead, the common thread is comfort food made more playful.

Our own spread demonstrated that range particularly well. A fully vegan breakfast can sit next to a salmon poke bowl without either feeling out of place. Truffle cheesy fries can join the table without anyone pretending they are there for balance. Then two fruit-forward drinks make the whole thing feel even more like brunch as an occasion rather than a meal category.

For mixed groups, that breadth is a strength. One person can want a substantial vegan breakfast, another can want salmon and sushi rice, and someone else can decide that fries and cake are a perfectly coherent plan.

The Setting

Right in the heart of Victoria.

Karamelli is located at 32 Triq ir-Repubblika, opposite the police station in Victoria. The café describes its space as a cosy room with an inner courtyard — useful for a business whose whole proposition encourages people to stay rather than rush through.

The central location is part of its appeal. This is not somewhere that requires a special detour across Gozo. It can naturally become part of a day exploring the capital: walk through Victoria, stop for brunch, stay for coffee, order cake, and realise considerably more time has passed than intended.

Karamelli is also part of the same hospitality family as Mal Moll in Xlendi. Where Karamelli focuses on all-day brunch in Victoria, its seafront sister moves towards Mediterranean and Maltese dining on the Xlendi quay.

The Comino Take

What stood out.

01

Range

The menu gives very different appetites a reason to share the same table — vegan breakfast, salmon, indulgent sides, drinks and desserts all fit comfortably within the same visit.

02

Personality

Playful dish names, colourful combinations and a relaxed all-day format keep the concept from feeling like another generic café menu.

03

Stay-a-while appeal

Karamelli makes sense as a pause in the middle of Victoria: somewhere a coffee can turn into brunch and brunch can very easily turn into dessert.
